Using Urban Fiction to promote freedom in libraries and enhance adult literacy
This conference presentation focuses on the strategic utilization of urban fiction to promote the freedom to read and elevate adult literacy in the community. By exemplifying the unique attributes that distinguish urban fiction from other literary genres, we establish an argument for its inclusion in library collections. We explore its historical evolution, highlighting both pioneering and contemporary authors who have contributed to its growth. The inclusion of urban fiction within library collections is justified by its wide appeal, capacity for meaningful representation, and integration with Hi-Lo materials. It can be used in a variety of ways through outreach, book displays and passive programming. Attendees of this presentation will gain valuable insights into the nuanced dynamics of urban fiction's influence, equipping library professionals with the tools and knowledge needed to harness its potential within their communities.
