Spooky season is here once again! Slight cool temperatures and winds bring some relief from our harsh summer heat. We embrace the fall season by indulging in pumpkin-flavored treats and bundling up with layers (not many, though). For many, it's time to look forward to costumes, candy, and gatherings with family and friends. I love Halloween and dressing up, as you have already noticed.

Unfortunately, our spooky season this year has included devastating hurricanes. Born and raised in Florida, I fully understand the hurricane experience, especially after surviving Andrew in 1992. Watching the forecast cones, regardless of trajectory, always brings much unease. In these moments, we can turn into each other and show actions of compassion. The simple act of listening and being present for someone, volunteering your time, or setting the intention of kindness can radiate joy. During these difficult times, the smallest gestures of support often remind us of our shared humanity and help us rebuild our physical and emotional well-being.

My thoughts are with library professionals across the state who are experiencing the destruction left behind by Helene and Milton.

Please consider donating to the FLA Hurricane Relief Fund and/or encourage individual library professionals or library systems in need to apply for assistance. For more information visit: https://secure.givelively.org/donate/florida-library-association-inc/2024-fla-s-hurricane-relief-fund-for-florida-libraries

FLA thanks contributors in advance for their generosity, which helps rebuild libraries and demonstrates the professional values of solidarity, resilience, and mutual support. The fund enables communities across Florida to overcome challenges together and continue serving others with strength and unity.

Whether through donations, acts of kindness, or simply being present for one another, we can help rebuild not only libraries but the spirit of our communities.

Thank you for your commitment to spread the joy.
